New Rochelle, located in Westchester County, New York  is on Long Island Sound about 10 miles south of White Plains and a mere 16 miles from Grand Central Terminal. The city, which is named after the French port of La Rochelle, lies on the Long Island Sound east of Mt. Vernon. It is the eighth-larg­est city in the State and the second-largest municipal­ity in Westchester County.

Major highways include Interstate 95 and the Hutchinson River Parkway. Metro North’s New Ha­ven Line provides rail service to New Rochelle.

Part of downtown New Rochelle was revitalized in 1999 with the opening of New Roc City, an entertain­ment complex including a 19-screen movie theater, IMAX theater, miniature golf, go carts, an arcade, health club, restaurants, hotel and supermarket. Additional revitalization has resulted from the construction of new luxury residences.

The city has an abundance of recreational opportuni­ties including parks with numerous athletic fields and public tennis courts. With 9 miles of waterfront there are beaches and marinas as well as more than 20 acres devoted to parks and nature preserves. New Rochelle has the private Wykagyl Golf Club plus five public courses in the surrounding area.
